The Patu.
INTRODUCTION
I am passionate about Patu's ( Māori Weapon) and have carved a few for the whanau, friends and commission work as well. The aura around the Patu is legendary, stepped in mana (strength) and whanau (family). In the hands of a skilled warrior, he or she was a formidable opponent in battle. This close-in weapon is seen in many portraits of Maori Chief's. They are holding onto this treasured Toanga with Mana. I picked up a real Patu at my grandfathers place, when I was young. I was told by my mum not to touch stuff. Being a kid there are no laws when curiosity is calling . I pushed a chair up to the corner of the fireplace and was able to grab the Patul on the mantle piece. I held the Patu with both hands as the handle was quite thick, and the Patu was heavy. I remember the odd shape and flowing curves it had. There were some groves and markings on the face of the Patu. I looked at it, till my arms ached. This whole experience left a deep impression on me.

My Tupuna (Ancestor), Rewi Manga Maniapoto in 1879, is holding a beautifully carved Patu.
