My Daily creative process

My day starts bright and early at 7am. First, a must-have coffee to kickstart the senses, followed by a quiet karakia (prayer) to open up the creative pathway. Painting takes precedence in the peaceful morning hours. At 10am, it's time for morning tea, then I head outside to my dedicated 20-foot container, where my Maori wood carving (Whakairo) magic happens. Carving continues until 4pm, followed by dinner. After dinner I focus on sculptures until 8pm. A quick clean-up and check of emails and social media follows. Then it's off to my drawing room to finish up sketching or prepping for the next day. Finally, evening prayers before heading to bed, perhaps with a bit of TV to wind down by 10pm. The schedule can change if prepping for a show or exhibition, but I stay with this process most of the time.

Inspiration & Challenges

With a 50-year creative career, motivation isn't an issue – it's a "creative curse"!. My mind is constantly buzzing with new ways to express creativity. The biggest challenge is juggling my creative pursuits with family (whanau ) visits, unplanned and planned trips. Everyday shopping, and household chores. I am a loner by nature and have zero social habits.

Overcoming Creative blocks

I’m fortunate to have the time to create with very few distractions. I am a loner by nature and have very little contact with others socially. My love and passion, built up over many years, overcomes any creative blocks. I love what I do and will continue as long as humanly possible.

Advice

Put your phone away, let people know that you are working and advise them to leave messages. Get yourself a diary or a yearly wall planner. Distraction is the biggest single problem. Yes, you have to do your daily chores and probably work and raise a family. But if you truly want to achieve your creative goals you can always find time. Its not how much time you need. Its the quality within the time that counts. Ifs its an hour a day or 30mins a day it all adds up. I worked a full time job plus raised a family and was able to carry out my art.
